The majority of schools work on an expectation of at least a three point score increase per year (converting sub-levels into point scores enables schools to track progress in smaller steps). This equates to satisfactory progress. Good progress would be demonstrated by more than a three point score increase per year.

There is clarity over nationally expected levels of attainment at the end of Key Stages 1, 2 and 4 which all SENCOs will be familiar with. But what about those pupils who are not working at age-related expectations – are they expected to make the same amount of progress? Ofsted’s School Inspection Handbook provides further advice on evaluating the achievement and progress of pupils with SEN:

‘For those groups of pupils whose cognitive ability is such that their attainment is unlikely ever to rise above “low”, the judgement on achievement should be based on an evaluation of the pupils’ learning and progress relative to their starting points at particular ages, and any assessment measures held by the school.’1
